Exhibition of graphic arts and painting of Toko Shinoda
and Noriko Saito
29/10/2017 / From November 5 to December 15, 2017, Kazarian Art Center will host an exhibition of graphic arts and paintings by Toko Shinoda and Noriko Saito, representing different generations in the history of Japanese fine arts.
Toko Shinoda (born in 1913) works in the Sumi technique, combining in her work traditional calligraphy and abstract expressionism. The first personal exhibition of Shinoda was held 77 years ago (!) in Tokyo, and in 1956 she first came to New York, already as an artist with world fame. The next decade, the artist is torn between Tokyo and New York, in a shocking boom of abstract expressionism. Shinoda conducts solo exhibitions in the US and Europe, her works are sold in the gallery of Betty Parsons, patroness of abstract expressionists, who worked among others with Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Jasper Jones.
The works of Toko Shinoda are in the collections of Albright-Knox, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Singapore, the Museum of Ostasiatische Kunst, Berlin, the Yale University Art Gallery, as well as in permanent collections of Rockefeller and Ford foundations, the Japanese Imperial Court, the Guggenheim Museum, the Haifa Art Museum, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Hague Museum and MOMA New York. Her legendary is difficult to overestimate - she is the only person in Japan, whose portrait is immortalized in postage stamps.
The second participant of the forthcoming exhibition at Kazarian Art Center is Noriko Saito, an artist who has long acquired her unique style both in painting and in graphics. It is a cheerful and energetic nature that allows her to easily transfer emotions to a sheet of paper. Her works translate an "extra dose of happiness" - a mysterious merry substance, which you feel from the first minutes of communicating with them. Noriko's creativity was awarded prizes at exhibitions in Japan, Thailand, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and thanks to the assistance of the Tolman Collection Tokyo was presented in Kazakhstan.
The exhibition of Toko Shinoda and Noriko Saito was held at Kazarian Art Center with the support of The Tolman Collection, and it was opened personally by Mr. Norman Tolman, who has been cooperating with Toko Shinoda for more than forty years.
